Snapchat CEO, Supermodel Erase $550M Medical Debt

Hundreds of thousands of Californians are receiving unexpected financial relief as Snapchat CEO Evan Spiegel and his wife, Miranda Kerr, have helped eliminate a substantial $550 million in medical debt. Their multimillion-dollar donation to the nonprofit Undue Medical Debt is set to benefit over 261,000 individuals starting in mid-July.

Undue Medical Debt purchases unpaid medical bills at a discount and cancels the debt for qualifying patients. Eligibility criteria include earning at or below 400% of the federal poverty level or having medical debt that exceeds 5% of annual income. This initiative provides crucial support amidst rising healthcare expenses and the broader cost of living crisis.

The largest portion of the debt relief, approximately $99 million, was allocated to San Diego County, assisting 40,369 residents. Los Angeles County followed, with $26.7 million erased for 17,466 people. Undue Medical Debt has now cleared over $40 billion in medical debt nationwide, highlighting a critical issue affecting one in four American adults.

This act of generosity by Spiegel and Kerr is part of their ongoing philanthropic efforts. Previously, they paid off student loans for graduates of Otis College of Art and Design and provided significant relief following the devastating January 2025 Los Angeles County wildfires. Spiegel expressed his deep care for California communities, noting the immense stress unexpected medical bills can cause families.
