Smart Meter Faults Trigger £40 Compensation
7 Feb
Summary
- New Ofgem rules grant £40 compensation for faulty smart meters.
- Compensation is automatic for eligible households after February 23.
- Issues include installation delays or supplier failure to provide repair plans.

Energy regulator Ofgem is implementing new rules starting February 23, which will empower households to claim up to £40 in compensation for faulty smart meters. While most smart meters function correctly, these strengthened regulations address issues where they do not.
The new measures require energy suppliers to adhere to stricter performance standards. Customers will automatically receive the £40 payment under specific conditions. These include waiting more than six weeks for a scheduled installation, having an appointment cancelled due to a supplier fault, or if a supplier fails to provide a fix plan within five working days of a reported meter problem.
These enhanced Guaranteed Standards of Performance aim to ensure a better smart meter rollout experience across the UK. Ofgem aims to improve supplier performance and protect consumers when problems arise, ensuring accurate billing and efficient energy usage tracking.
