Tax Cuts Revive Small Cars, But SUVs Lead Market
24 Sep
Summary
- Small car market share rose from 2.3% to 3.3% post tax cut.
- SUVs continue to dominate, holding 58% market share.
- Maruti Suzuki saw a 58% rise in small car sales.
Passenger vehicle tax reductions implemented a year ago have led to a modest increase in the market share of entry-level small cars, growing from 2.3% to 3.3% in the first five months of the current fiscal year. This contrasts with the continued strong consumer demand for sport utility vehicles (SUVs), which have expanded their market share to 58% in the same period.
Maruti Suzuki reported a substantial 58% increase in its small car sales, with entry-level cars experiencing a 96% surge, boosting the company's market share by 1.8 percentage points. Officials noted that improved affordability due to the tax cut, which lowered GST on small cars to 18% from 28%, has positively impacted demand. However, a deeper consumer shift towards SUVs as aspirational first cars, even in the used car market, is also influencing purchasing decisions.
While affordability has improved, customer aspirations are increasingly leaning towards SUVs, whether new entry-level models or pre-owned mid-sized options. This evolving preference means that the return of first-time buyers is not necessarily translating into a revival of the traditional small car segment, even as SUV sales continue to climb.
