Small Caps Shine: Profit Growth Outpaces Giants
24 Jun
Summary
- Large firms showed higher profit growth due to one-off gains.
- Mid and small caps demonstrated resilient revenue expansion.
- Small-cap stocks significantly outperformed large-cap indices.

Large-cap companies achieved stronger year-on-year net profit growth in the March 2026 quarter compared to mid and small-cap firms. This growth was primarily fueled by one-off gains, as their revenue expansion was slower and margin contractions were wider.
In contrast, mid and small-cap companies exhibited more robust revenue growth and narrower margin declines. For example, net profit grew by 30% for large-caps but only 16% for small-caps, while mid-caps saw a 4% drop. Aggregate revenue growth for large companies at 10% lagged behind mid and small companies.
Operating margins also showed disparities, with large-caps at 19.4% compared to mid-caps at 15.2% and small-caps at 11.2%. However, large-caps experienced a higher margin contraction of 210 basis points, versus 40 basis points for mid-caps and 125 for small-caps.
This financial performance difference is reflected in stock market indices. Over the last three months, the BSE 150 MidCap and BSE 250 SmallCap indices surged 14% and 22% respectively, significantly outpacing the BSE Sensex's 3% and BSE 100's 6% returns.
