Slovakia Lifts Diesel Export Ban Amid Middle East Tensions
8 Apr
Summary
- Slovakia ends diesel export ban, but other fuel measures remain.
- Country cited Middle East conflict and Iran strikes as reasons.
- Slovnaft fully returned state-loaned crude oil reserves.

As of Wednesday, Slovakia is set to resume diesel fuel exports starting Friday, according to Prime Minister Robert Fico. This decision follows temporary bans enacted due to volatile global oil prices, exacerbated by U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran. While the diesel export ban is being lifted, other implemented fuel measures will continue.
These additional measures, including limits on diesel sales and higher prices for vehicles with foreign plates, aim to address "fuel tourism." The situation was also impacted by a halt in Russian oil supplies to Slovakia via Ukraine, though the country's sole refiner, Slovnaft, has fully repaid crude oil borrowed from state reserves.
