Skoda VW India Project Stalls Despite Kylaq Success
19 Jul
Summary
- Skoda VW India's ambitious India 2.0 project is falling short of its goals.
- The group secured only 2.44% market share, half of its 5% target by 2025.
- One successful model, the Kylaq, isn't enough to boost overall performance.

Skoda Volkswagen India's significant investment in its India 2.0 project has not yielded the desired market share. Launched in FY19 with a 1 billion euro investment, the project aimed for a 5% market share by 2025, but only reached 2.44% by FY26.
Initial phases saw the introduction of India-specific models like the Skoda Kushaq and Volkswagen Taigun SUVs, leading to sales growth through FY23. However, sales declined in FY24 and FY25, returning the group to its FY18 market share levels.
The Skoda Kylaq, launched in January 2025, saw significant success, accounting for 63.5% of Skoda's sales. Despite this, its impact on the group's overall market share has been marginal.
Analysts suggest that products were perhaps 'over-engineered' for the Indian market, impacting pricing and competitiveness. The company is exploring localization strategies while maintaining its brand identity. A challenge remains for Volkswagen, which has not yet introduced a comparable sub-4 meter SUV.
Sales of other models like the Skoda Kushaq and Volkswagen Virtus and Taigun have seen declines, which some attribute to product lifecycles and the popularity of the Kylaq cannibalizing sibling sales.
