Summary
- AI agents can now complete purchases on Shopify.
- New tools enable AI to inspect and update checkouts.
- Shopify extends AI capabilities beyond product search.

Shopify has significantly expanded the capabilities of AI agents on its platform, now allowing them to complete purchases on behalf of users. This move contrasts with some retailers blocking AI access.
Previously, AI agents supported by Shopify could only search for products and add them to carts. The recent update introduces three new tools: get_checkout, update_checkout, and complete_checkout.
These tools enable AI agents to read the checkout screen, modify details such as delivery options or customer addresses, and then finalize the transaction once authorized by the buyer. This is achieved without resorting to screenshots or web scraping.
The functionality leverages Shopify's Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) and the proposed WebMCP standard, designed for agents operating within the buyer's browser. Top AI agents like Muse and Instinct already have partnerships with Shopify for agentic commerce, with Instinct's partnership announced concurrently with this update.
This feature is currently rolling out to all eligible Shopify merchants, according to Gil Greenberg, a staff product manager at Shopify. The integration aims to provide structured and efficient APIs for AI agents, ensuring accurate commerce facts and handoff requirements.
