New Trail Celebrates 500 Years of Shipbuilding History

A new Shipyard Trail has been launched to commemorate over 500 years of shipbuilding heritage in north Devon. This trail guides visitors along the historical routes connecting the Bideford and Appledore shipyards on the Torridge estuary. The initiative is a key part of the Heritage Open Days 2026 program in Devon, focusing on the "everyday histories of working lives."
The trail links sites where a diverse range of vessels, from fishing boats to Royal Navy ships, were constructed. Many of these locations now show little visible evidence of their industrial past but significantly shaped the local communities. An exhibition in Barnstaple from September 17 to 19 will showcase the Shipyard Trail and related projects.
Other events coinciding with Heritage Open Days are scheduled in Cornwall and Jersey. In Cornwall, activities include guided tours and open days at various heritage sites. National Trust Jersey is opening four properties on September 19, including La Ronde Porte and the Georgian House. All events are free to attend.
