31 May
Summary
- Shell PLC partnered with QatarEnergy for offshore exploration blocks in Uruguay.
- HSBC upgraded Shell PLC stock to Buy from Hold citing improved cash generation.
- Acquisition of ARC Resources is expected to boost Shell's production significantly.

Shell PLC is expanding its international operations through a significant collaboration with QatarEnergy. On May 20, 2026, QatarEnergy acquired interests in three offshore exploration blocks in Uruguay from a Shell subsidiary. This strategic move represents QatarEnergy's first venture into Uruguay's upstream energy sector.
Shell PLC continues to hold substantial stakes in these blocks, reinforcing its role as a critical partner for QatarEnergy in South America. This collaboration extends their existing projects beyond Qatar and other global locations.
Analysts at HSBC have recently upgraded Shell PLC's stock rating to 'Buy' from 'Hold.' This upgrade, issued on May 18, 2026, reflects their optimism regarding the company's enhanced cash generation and robust earnings performance.
The acquisition of ARC Resources by Shell is expected to significantly boost its production by approximately 370,000 barrels of oil per day. This deal also adds an estimated 2 billion barrels of proved and probable reserves, driving an anticipated annual growth rate of around 4% through 2030.
Despite a slight reduction in its quarterly share buyback program to $3 billion from $3.5 billion, Shell plans to allocate the difference to its balance sheet. This move will help offset an unexpected 5% increase in its dividend. HSBC anticipates the share buyback to return to $3.5 billion by the first quarter of 2027.
