Senior Train Discounts May Return in Budget 2026
29 Jan
Summary
- Indian Railways may restore 40-50% fare discounts for seniors.
- Concessions were suspended in March 2020 due to the pandemic.
- Millions of elderly travellers could benefit from renewed travel affordability.

Ahead of Budget 2026, senior citizens in India are hopeful for the return of railway fare discounts. Discussions are reportedly underway between the Finance Ministry and the Ministry of Railways regarding the reinstatement of concessions.
These fare reductions, which previously offered 40% for men aged 60+ and 50% for women aged 58+, were suspended in March 2020. The suspension was a measure taken due to severe financial strain on Indian Railways during the COVID-19 pandemic.
If approved, the announcement is expected in the upcoming Union Budget. Restoring the concession would provide financial relief and enhance travel accessibility for millions of elderly individuals who rely on trains for affordable long-distance travel.
