A substantial £950 million investment has been announced to upgrade the subsea electricity cable network serving Scotland's islands. SSEN Distribution will enhance its 113 subsea cables, which power 60 islands, boosting resilience and capacity to meet rising energy demands.
This major project is anticipated to create thousands of high-quality green jobs, with estimates suggesting over 3,500 fixed-term roles will be supported over eight years. These roles will span installation sites and company bases, benefiting local economies. Islanders will be able to connect modern technologies like electric vehicle chargers, solar panels, and heat pumps to the upgraded network.
The investment will also empower local energy generators to produce and export green power, aiding the decarbonisation of island industries. Energy Secretary Gillian Martin welcomed the move, stating it aligns with Scotland's net-zero targets and will stimulate economic growth. The upgrades are being managed by five partner companies, emphasizing the use of local supply chains for delivery.
