26 Aug
Summary
- SBI's mortgage portfolio is set to surpass ₹10 trillion this quarter.
- The bank holds a significant 28% market share in the home loan segment.
- Securitisation of home loans remains illiquid, impacting capital recycling.

State Bank of India (SBI) is on the cusp of a significant milestone, with its Chairman CS Setty projecting the bank's mortgage portfolio to surpass ₹10 trillion in the current quarter. This follows a robust performance that saw the portfolio exceed ₹9 trillion in the last financial year. SBI currently commands nearly 28% of the home loan market share in India.
Setty emphasized that customer trust in SBI's transparent pricing, documentation, and due diligence processes is a key driver for its home loan success. He also underscored the broader economic significance of home loans, noting their multiplier effect on over 200 allied industries and their integral role in India's economic growth.
The bank is actively exploring ways to enhance the liquidity of home loan securitisation, which remains relatively illiquid in India compared to global markets. SBI aims to facilitate securitisation transactions, requiring increased participation from the non-bank sector to strengthen funding capabilities and deepen the financial ecosystem.
In parallel, SBI is confident about garnering approximately USD 10 billion from Non-Resident Indians and foreign investors before the RBI's concessional swap window for FCNR-B deposits closes on August 31, 2026.
