Saudi Neom Mega-Projects Scaled Back Amid Funding Woes
25 May
Summary
- The ambitious $50bn Cube project at Neom has been significantly reduced.
- Other flagship Neom projects like The Line and Trojena are also scaled down.
- This retrenchment signals a shift in Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 strategy.

Saudi Arabia has significantly reduced the scope of The Cube, a planned mega-project within the $500bn Neom development. This adjustment signifies a broader retrenchment across Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's Vision 2030 initiative, as other flagship projects like The Line and Trojena are also being scaled back, put on hold, or abandoned.
The Cube was initially projected to cost an estimated $50bn. Neom itself, envisioned as a transformative redesign of northwest Saudi Arabia, is backed by the kingdom's Public Investment Fund (PIF). Vision 2030, launched a decade ago, aimed for ambitious urban and technological marvels on a global scale.
Further projects under the Neom umbrella have experienced cutbacks. The Asian Winter Games, originally scheduled for Trojena in 2029, were canceled and relocated, highlighting the shifting timelines. This strategic retreat is partly attributed to fluctuations in oil prices and persistent uncertainty in foreign investment.
This pattern of scaling back grand announcements aligns with previous development phases in the kingdom. The LIV Golf tour, which has incurred approximately $5bn in costs, adds to the financial retrenchment. The practical implication for Vision 2030 is a move away from an uninterrupted push towards a more constrained, project-by-project advancement.
