The Maharashtra government has entered into a significant Memorandum of Understanding with three Finnish companies to elevate Sassoon Dock into a premier global fishing harbour. This collaboration, spearheaded by the Maharashtra Fisheries Development Corporation, signifies a commitment to modernizing one of India's major fishing hubs.
The agreement focuses on integrating advanced technologies and digitisation to improve operational efficiency. Key objectives include significantly enhancing waste management practices, implementing robust recycling programs for plastic waste and discarded fishing nets, and bolstering the net-repair system via extensive capacity building. This strategic development aims to boost the harbour's economic vitality.
Sassoon Dock currently serves as a crucial economic center for the fishing community, with approximately 1,560 registered mechanized fishing boats. It contributes an average annual fish production of 50,000 to 60,000 metric tonnes. The project is set to reinforce the welfare of the fishing community and champion sustainable coastal development.
