Charity Status Lost Over Clerical Error: Urgent Reinstatement Plea
3 Nov
Summary
- Food Banks of Saskatchewan lost charity status due to accounting error.
- Organization cannot accept grants or donations from other charities.
- Reinstatement is pending with an estimated two-month waiting period.
Food Banks of Saskatchewan experienced a significant setback when its charitable status was revoked in September due to a paperwork error by its accounting firm. The organization, which supports 35 food banks across the province, is now unable to directly apply for or receive grants from other charities, including Food Banks Canada.
Executive Director Michael Kincade expressed frustration but assured that operations are largely continuing. Online donations and receipt services are being managed by the Saskatoon Food Bank and Learning Centre, a member charity, to minimize disruption as the busy holiday giving season approaches.
The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) confirmed that the revocation process involves multiple notices. Food Banks of Saskatchewan has applied for reinstatement, which, if successful, would be retroactive. They anticipate a decision from the CRA within approximately two months, with Kincade expressing high confidence in a positive outcome.
