Samsung's AI Chip Boom: Profit Soars Eightfold
7 Apr
Summary
- Samsung projects record first-quarter profit, up over eightfold.
- Booming AI infrastructure demand drives chip prices and shortages.
- Company narrows gap in high bandwidth memory (HBM) chip production.

Samsung Electronics projected a record-high operating profit for the first quarter, surpassing expectations with an increase of more than eightfold compared to the previous year. This significant financial performance is driven by the escalating demand for artificial intelligence infrastructure, which has created supply constraints and driven up semiconductor prices.
The preliminary results indicate an estimated operating profit of 57.2 trillion won ($37.92 billion) for the January to March period. This figure nearly triples Samsung's previous record quarterly operating profit from the fourth quarter of the prior year.
Samsung is benefiting from the AI data center boom, which has constrained supply for traditional chips used in consumer electronics. The company is also making strides in producing high bandwidth memory (HBM) chips, essential for AI chipsets, narrowing the gap with competitors.
Revenue for the January to March period is also expected to show substantial growth, with an anticipated increase of 68% to 133 trillion won. This performance aligns with broader industry trends, as seen with other chipmakers forecasting strong demand.
