This move, finalized on Monday, ensures the continued operation of Santiam Hospital and its associated clinics, preventing a potential closure that had been a serious concern.
The merger followed a period of "significant headwinds" in the healthcare industry, with Santiam Hospital facing "imminent risk of insolvency." Both organizations had sought an emergency exemption from the Oregon Health Authority to expedite the process, emphasizing the critical need to maintain local medical services.
Lawmakers and community members advocated for the approval of the acquisition, highlighting the potential for a "maternity health care desert" if Santiam were to close. Salem Health had also warned of the need to expand its emergency room capacity if the smaller system ceased operations.
As part of the finalized contract, leadership structures have been established, with Maggie Hudson remaining CEO of Santiam Hospital and joining Salem Health's executive leadership council. Two members of the Santiam board will also join Salem Health's board, integrating the organizations.
