South Korea Eyes Record $531B Budget for AI Chip Dominance

South Korea announced plans for a record budget of over 800 trillion won for fiscal year 2027. This substantial fiscal initiative is supported by increased tax revenues, largely attributed to the nation's thriving AI chip sector. The government has identified three "mega-projects"—investments in semiconductors, AI data centers, and physical AI—as top fiscal priorities for the upcoming year.

To finance these ambitious goals, the administration will implement significant restructuring of existing spending programs, aiming to cut approximately 50 trillion won. Additionally, a new Future Response Fund will be established as a strategic investment platform. This fund will utilize tax revenues that exceed long-term projections, channeling them into key areas such as youth development, growth engines, regional initiatives, and talent cultivation.
