RWE Powers Up US Expansion with Gas Plants
12 Mar
Summary
- RWE will invest heavily in new US gas-fired power plants.
- Data centers and AI are driving significant power demand.
- Nearly half of RWE's 2031 spending target is for the US.

Germany's largest power producer, RWE, is significantly increasing its investment in the United States, identifying it as its most crucial growth market. The expansion is primarily driven by the exponential demand for electricity from data centers and the growing need for artificial intelligence, which requires substantial power supply.
RWE plans to invest 17 billion euros ($20 billion) in the US by 2031, representing nearly half of its global spending. This investment will bolster its installed capacity, which already stands at 13 gigawatts (GW) from solar, wind, and battery storage. The company is developing a pipeline of 5 GW in gas-fired power plant projects, targeting Texas and Midwestern states.
These new gas-fired facilities are intended to guarantee a continuous, 24/7 electricity supply, a critical factor for both industrial companies and data centers. RWE anticipates that its US installed capacity will increase to 22 GW as a result of these investments.
