RTX GTF Advantage Engine Gets EU Approval
17 Apr
Summary
- GTF Advantage engine receives EU aviation safety approval for Airbus A320neo family.
- The engine offers improved take-off thrust for higher payload and longer range.
- Production of the older GTF engine version will cease by 2028.

Pratt & Whitney's GTF Advantage engine has received approval from the European Union Aviation Safety Agency for installation on Airbus's A320neo family aircraft. This engine, developed by RTX's engine division, offers a crucial performance enhancement.
The GTF Advantage engine delivers an increase of 4% to 8% in take-off thrust. This improvement directly translates to a higher payload capacity and an extended operational range for aircraft. Such advancements are vital as airlines increasingly prioritize fuel efficiency and extended flight capabilities to manage costs and emissions.
This engine upgrade allows narrowbody aircraft like the A320neo to fly longer distances with greater payload. The GTF Advantage is designed to be fully interchangeable with Pratt & Whitney's existing GTF model. RTX intends for the Advantage model to become the standard production engine, with the older version being phased out by 2028.
While the GTF Advantage engine was certified by the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration in February 2025, Pratt & Whitney has faced challenges. The company has been dealing with the aftermath of a manufacturing issue disclosed in July 2023, which led to the grounding of numerous aircraft globally and necessitated extensive quality inspections. The company had initially anticipated the updated engine, announced in 2021, to enter service in 2024.
