Rs10 Crore Station Lacks Basic Toilets
21 Jun
Summary
- Dumraon railway station earned nearly Rs10 crore but lacks usable toilets.
- Thousands of daily passengers face unsanitary conditions with no functional toilets.
- Multiple toilet facilities are either unusable, locked, demolished, or never opened.

Dumraon railway station, a significant 'B' category station on the DDU-Patna rail section, generated approximately Rs9.95 crore in revenue during the 2025-26 financial year. Despite this substantial income, the station suffers from a severe lack of basic amenities, particularly functional toilets, affecting thousands of daily passengers. The few available toilets are in a deplorable condition, with one western-end toilet allegedly not cleaned for months and considered unfit for use.
Historically, Dumraon station had four toilets, but currently, none are operational. The pay-and-use facility near the ticket counter remains locked. A temporary toilet between platforms 1 and 2 has been demolished. Another facility, handed over by the power distribution company, has never been made accessible to the public and now serves as a motorcycle parking area.
Passengers have reported that railway officials repeatedly shift responsibility for the facility's upkeep, citing issues like a lack of water supply or blaming staff and contractors. This negligence impacts nearly 4,000 passengers daily, with women, children, and the elderly being disproportionately affected. While new toilets are proposed under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, passengers fear a lengthy delay, arguing that a revenue-generating station deserves immediate attention for passenger dignity, health, and safety.
