Robinhood's Prediction Markets Outshine Stock Trading
30 Jul
Summary
- Prediction market fees reached $156 million, surpassing stock and crypto trading.
- World Cup event contracts saw a 50% quarterly increase in wagers.
- Robinhood's prediction market users are more likely to hold retirement accounts.

Robinhood's prediction markets have become the firm's second-largest trading business, significantly outperforming stock and crypto trading in the recent quarter. This revenue stream generated $156 million in fees, a 50% increase from the prior quarter, driven by a surge in customer wagers on event contracts, largely attributed to the World Cup.
The company has strategically routed some event contracts through its own regulated exchange, Rothera, which CEO Vlad Tenev described as a "proof of concept" for future scaling. Tenev anticipates continued growth, pointing to upcoming events like the football season and midterm elections.
Robinhood's strategy of lowering commissions on prediction markets aims to capture market share, supported by interest revenue and other trading activities. This approach has successfully attracted nearly 2 million users to its prediction markets, with CFO Shiv Verma noting these users are more likely to engage with other Robinhood services, such as retirement accounts.
Financially, Robinhood reported a net income of $573 million, or $0.62 per share, exceeding analyst expectations even after accounting for an accounting change related to its venture fund. The company also experienced a 127% year-over-year increase in its margin book and a 9% rise in net interest revenue.
