Summary
- Rivian CEO confident on autonomy milestone unlocking $250M Uber investment.
- New R2 compact SUV shows strong demand, exceeding expectations.
- Partnership with Volkswagen for a low-cost European EV is on track.

Rivian's Chief Executive Officer, RJ Scaringe, stated on Thursday that the electric vehicle manufacturer is "very confident" in meeting an autonomy milestone by the end of the year. This achievement is critical as it would unlock a $250 million investment tranche from Uber. The company is also seeing strong demand for its new R2 compact SUV, which has become a significant revenue source.
This Uber funding, coupled with robust R2 sales, is vital for Rivian's strategy to mitigate substantial losses and cash burn. The company is simultaneously investing in self-driving technology and leveraging its joint venture with Volkswagen. Uber's investment strategy includes up to $1.25 billion by 2031, with an initial $300 million already provided, contingent on meeting specific autonomy milestones.
The R2 model, designed to compete with the Tesla Model Y, has surpassed sales of Rivian's R1 SUV, pickup truck, and delivery van in its first full quarter, contributing to record deliveries of 19,248 vehicles. Rivian is actively increasing production by ramping up a second shift for the R2, anticipating further growth in the fourth quarter. Cheaper variants of the R2, starting at $45,000, are scheduled for release next year.
Scaringe also addressed reports concerning the integration of Rivian's software into Volkswagen vehicles, dismissing them as "noisy" and affirming a "very positive" relationship. The initial Volkswagen vehicle incorporating Rivian's technology, a low-cost EV intended for the European market, is projected for a 2027 launch. Volkswagen will also license the underlying technology for Rivian's AI assistant.
