Rivian is introducing its R2 line of electric SUVs this spring, featuring a launch variant priced at $57,990. This strategy is crucial for the company as it seeks to expand its market reach and challenge Tesla's popular Model Y. The R2 is a critical new offering, especially after the expiration of key EV tax credits last year.
A more accessible $45,000 variant, boasting over 275 miles of range, is anticipated by late 2027. This model is expected to significantly broaden Rivian's appeal. The company also plans a rear-wheel-drive Standard trim at $48,490, with deliveries commencing in the first half of 2027.
Production of the R2 will initially take place at Rivian's existing plant in Normal, Illinois, with plans to transition output to the new Georgia facility by 2028. All R2 trims will include hardware for Rivian's Autonomy+ driver assistance system. Analysts caution that U.S. policy changes could impact sales, as many initial R2 orders may have factored in previous EV tax credits.
