The much-anticipated Rivian R2 SUV is set to begin its customer deliveries on June 9. This new electric SUV is positioned to capture a larger market segment than the company's existing R1 lineup, offering a more accessible price point.
Initial trims of the R2 SUV will be available starting just below $60,000. Rivian has outlined future plans for an even more economical "standard" version, expected to launch in 2027 with a price tag of $48,490. Furthermore, a "standard" model is slated for release late next year, priced around $45,000.
Rivian's founder and CEO, RJ Scaringe, has emphasized the R2's critical importance, calling it "maybe the most important thing we've launched to date." The automaker projects a rapid production ramp-up, aiming for deliveries of up to 25,000 R2 vehicles by the close of this year.
The company is making a substantial wager on the R2 and its hatchback counterpart, the R3, to steer Rivian towards its first-ever profitable period since its inception in 2009. These new models are seen as key to the company's long-term financial success.
