Rivian R2 Surges: Deliveries Exceed Expectations
31 Jul
Summary
- Rivian R2 deliveries began in June, surpassing internal targets.
- The R2 is expected to drive positive automotive gross profit by year-end.
- Production ramp-up is accelerating with a second shift planned soon.

Rivian Automotive commenced customer deliveries of its new R2 electric vehicle in June. The company reports that these initial deliveries have already surpassed internal expectations, signaling a successful market entry for the latest model.
The R2 is designed to broaden Rivian's market reach with a lower price point compared to the R1 series, aiming to compete directly with models like the Tesla Model Y. While currently available R2 versions are priced higher than anticipated, lower-priced variants are slated for release in early 2027. Management stated that the R2 launch has proceeded more smoothly than the earlier R1 rollout.
Rivian anticipates the R2 will contribute to positive automotive gross profit by year-end. This projection comes after the company absorbed approximately $100 million in additional ramp-up costs during the second quarter, with further inefficiencies expected in the third quarter. Production at the Normal, Illinois, facility is operating on a single shift, but a second shift is scheduled to begin by the end of the third quarter.
The company increased its full-year delivery forecast to 65,000-70,000 vehicles earlier this month, attributing the expected increase primarily to the accelerated R2 ramp-up in the fourth quarter. Customer feedback on the R2 has been positive, with a notable portion of initial buyers being new to electric vehicles.
