Rivian CEO: Autonomy is EV market's next big shift

Rivian Automotive Inc. CEO RJ Scaringe has indicated that autonomous driving technology is poised to create a significant paradigm shift within the automotive sector. During the company's Q3 2026 earnings call, Scaringe expressed his view that self-driving capabilities could become embedded in vehicle pricing, representing an inflection point for the industry and a major driver of market share changes.

Rivian's "Autonomy+" subscription has reportedly surpassed expectations, with its "Universal Hands-Free" system capable of operating across vast distances in the U.S. The "Point to Point" supervised self-driving system, designed to handle complex driving scenarios, is also seen as a key step towards achieving Level 4 autonomy by 2028. Scaringe noted that this technology is expected to unlock new demand for Rivian vehicles.

Additionally, Rivian's collaboration with Volkswagen AG has proven to be a substantial revenue source, contributing 60% to the company's software and services revenue. This partnership is also enabling Rivian to expand its presence in the European market with the upcoming ID.Every1 vehicle, built on Rivian's platform. The company reported third-quarter revenue of $2.155 billion, surpassing analyst expectations.

The company's self-driving advancements also have implications for Robotaxi services, with plans for deployment with Uber in 2028. Rivian anticipates achieving a milestone by the end of 2026 that could unlock an additional $250 million equity investment from Uber, as part of a larger $1.25 billion investment agreement through 2031.
