Rheinmetall Bids for German Naval Yards Kiel
7 May
Summary
- Rheinmetall has submitted a bid for German Naval Yards Kiel.
- This move expands Rheinmetall's presence in the naval defense sector.
- Rival Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems is also vying for the shipyard.

German defense contractor Rheinmetall has entered the bidding process for German Naval Yards Kiel (GNYK) through a non-binding offer. This strategic move significantly bolsters Rheinmetall's presence in the naval defense industry. The acquisition bid places Rheinmetall in direct competition with Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (TKMS), another major warship manufacturer that had also submitted a non-binding offer for GNYK in January.
GNYK is currently part of the family-owned French shipbuilder CMN Naval group and employs approximately 400 individuals. Rheinmetall's bid underscores its commitment to expanding its naval footprint, following its recent acquisition of German warship maker NVL, now operating under its Naval Systems division. CEO Armin Papperger expressed optimism for accelerated growth in the second quarter, driven by substantial orders in the naval and vehicle sectors, further supported by the integration of the Naval Systems segment, which already includes projects valued at 5.5 billion euros.
