Remote Valley's Power Hope Dims Amid Meter Delays
10 Mar
Summary
- Mains electricity connected but meters are not fitted due to delays.
- Residents endure generator noise while waiting for power.
- Energy supplier apologizes for significant and rare booking errors.

Residents of the remote Upper Coquet valley in Northumberland are experiencing frustration as delays in energy meter installations prevent them from accessing newly connected mains electricity. While Northern Powergrid completed connections for several off-grid properties, some households, including those at Shillmoor, have waited over six months for an engineer from Octopus Energy. This has left residents like Sam Wood using noisy diesel generators, despite having access to a reliable power source they cannot utilize.
Octopus Energy acknowledged its shortcomings, admitting to significant booking mistakes that exacerbated the delays. The company stated that while occasional rearranged visits occur due to unforeseen circumstances, three consecutive failed appointments are exceptionally rare. They have committed to reviewing and improving their new connection processes. Meanwhile, farmer Scott Iley, also in Barrowburn, faced similar issues with Octopus Energy before switching to British Gas, experiencing a few months of delay in obtaining his meter's administration number. He noted the "transformational" impact of mains electricity, highlighting the stark contrast for his neighbors still waiting.
