RELX's AI Edge: Proprietary Data Beats Startups
26 Feb
Summary
- RELX cites proprietary data and scale as key differentiators.
- Company's legal business adds 4 million documents daily.
- AI is seen as an opportunity, not a threat, for RELX.

Information and analytics group RELX is unfazed by the emergence of AI-native startups, according to finance chief Nick Luff. He asserts that the company's extensive proprietary data and considerable scale provide a structural advantage that is difficult for competitors to replicate.
RELX's legal business, for instance, contains over 100 billion documents and expands by approximately 4 million new documents each day. Luff emphasized that this unique content flow, combined with the expertise to apply relevant algorithms and analytics, directly supports customer decisions.
Luff further stated that AI is not a new challenge but is deeply integrated across RELX's operations. The risk business has utilized AI for years, while generative AI products in the legal sector have achieved strong market penetration and increased customer spending over the past couple of years.
Rather than facing pricing pressures, RELX sees generative AI as a significant opportunity that enhances its pricing power and drives demand. The company experienced a 9% growth in its legal business last year, partly attributed to AI-driven increased customer spending, and anticipates further upside potential from new technologies.
