Summary
- ReelShort targets Asia with new telco and studio deals.
- Microdrama platform boasts 70 million monthly users globally.
- AI reduces production costs by 90% amid fierce competition.

Crazy Maple Studio's CEO, Joey Jia, is spearheading ReelShort's expansion into Asia, following recent deals with Thai telco AIS and Philippine telco Globe. A content partnership with Korean studio Showbox was also announced.
Launched in 2022, ReelShort specializes in English-language vertical dramas for mobile viewing, with episodes lasting one to two minutes. The platform has garnered approximately 70 million monthly active users and over 286 million app downloads globally.
Jia attributes the success to "emotion-driven stories" optimized for mobile consumption. Initially struggling with complex narratives, ReelShort shifted to simpler, more accessible plots, which significantly improved engagement and revenue.
While Crazy Maple Studio produces many in-house titles, around 4,000 licensed shows are available. Chinese microdramas, in particular, have performed exceptionally well when dubbed into English, exceeding Jia's initial expectations.
The company has leveraged AI to cut production costs by approximately 90%, though this has also increased market competition significantly. Jia emphasizes a continued reliance on human actors and writers, viewing AI as a tool to enhance, rather than replace, creative storytelling.
With North America becoming saturated, ReelShort is focusing on international markets where over 70% of its traffic already originates. The platform is actively producing local content, starting in Latin America and now eyeing Asia, including co-producing Korean-language shows with Showbox.
These strategic moves, including dubbing content and forming local partnerships, are aimed at capturing new users and revenue streams in Asia's large, mobile-first audiences.
