Redditch Council Offers Pet Cremations to Boost Funds
12 Mar
Summary
- Redditch Borough Council will launch pet cremations to raise funds.
- The service aims to generate up to £7,000 weekly at full capacity.
- It follows a successful model pioneered by Barnsley Council.

Redditch Borough Council is introducing a new pet cremation service from approximately August, using a section of Abbey Cemetery. This initiative is designed to create a sustainable income stream, with projections suggesting it could raise up to £7,000 weekly at full capacity to support the council's budget.
The service will offer cremations for dogs, cats, and other small pets, priced between £175-£250 for dogs and less for smaller animals. The move is based on the increasing popularity of pet cremation and the high rate of pet ownership in Worcestershire. This approach mirrors the success of Barnsley Council, which launched Britain's first council-led pet cremation service in 2016.
The UK's pet funeral market is experiencing substantial growth, expected to rise from £110 million in 2024 to £195 million by 2030. Redditch Council has allocated £50,000 for the service launch, which will offer up to 35 pet cremations per week, addressing a gap in local provision as private options are less common in the area.
