Russian Gold Flows to Hong Kong Surge
6 Oct
Summary
- Hong Kong imported 112.7 tonnes of Russian gold in early 2026.
- Western sanctions have rerouted Russian bullion to Asian markets.
- Hong Kong serves as a vital gateway for Russian gold into China.

Hong Kong has recorded a historic inflow of Russian-origin gold, with 112.7 tonnes imported in the first seven months of 2026. This figure dramatically surpasses the 92.1 tonnes imported throughout all of 2025 and marks a significant increase from just 3.3 tonnes in 2021.
The substantial rise in imports reflects the impact of Western sanctions imposed after Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine. These sanctions have effectively closed off major Western markets like London, previously a primary destination for Russian bullion.
Analysts note that Hong Kong now serves as a critical hub for Russian gold, facilitating its entry into mainland China, the world's largest gold-consuming market. China's decision not to sanction Russian gold, coupled with Hong Kong's robust trading and storage infrastructure, makes it an advantageous route.
This shift coincides with China's own increased demand for gold, with households viewing it as a store of value and the People's Bank of China expanding its reserves. China's official gold holdings rose by over 40 tonnes in the first half of 2026.
