RBI Slashes Cheque Clearance Time to Hours, Ending 1-2 Day Waits
4 Oct, 2025
Summary
- New RBI guidelines clear cheques within hours, not days
- Continuous clearing and hourly settlements between banks
- Faster access to funds for customers, improved cash flow for businesses

On 4 October 2025, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is set to revolutionize the way cheque clearance works across the country. Under the new guidelines, cheques will now be cleared within a few hours instead of the previous 1-2 business day waiting period.
This significant change aims to make cheque transactions quicker, safer, and more convenient for all bank customers. Until now, cheques were processed in batches under the Cheque Truncation System (CTS), which could take up to two days. However, the RBI is replacing this system with continuous clearing and hourly settlements between banks.
Going forward, cheques deposited between 10 AM and 4 PM will be scanned and processed instantly. From 11 AM onwards, settlements between banks will take place every hour. Additionally, if the paying bank fails to confirm a cheque by the set deadline, it will be automatically marked as cleared.
This step-by-step rollout will ensure a smooth transition, with Phase 1 (4 October 2025 to 2 January 2026) requiring banks to confirm cheques by 7 PM on the same day. In Phase 2 (from 3 January 2026), banks will have just three hours to confirm each cheque.
The RBI's decision aims to provide a modern, real-time banking experience for cheque users. Key advantages include faster access to funds, improved cash flow for businesses, nationwide uniformity, and transparent tracking of cheque status. With this upgrade, India's banking system is moving closer to real-time settlements, directly benefiting millions of customers who rely on cheques for payments.
