RBI Eases Forex Rules for Personal Deals
7 Oct
Summary
- Individuals' personal foreign exchange transactions are exempt from new reporting rules.
- Routine payments for services and subscriptions do not require RBI reporting.
- Small export transactions up to ₹10 lakh can use self-declarations.
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has clarified that personal foreign exchange transactions will not be subject to the new reporting requirements, addressing potential misunderstandings regarding compliance burdens.
RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra confirmed that everyday payments for services and subscriptions, such as those for TV channels, apps, or journals, are exempt from reporting. Similarly, individuals receiving payments from abroad for services like tutoring or small software tasks are also outside the scope of these new obligations.
Further easing of documentation for smaller export transactions has been implemented. Exporters involved in transactions up to ₹10 lakh per bill can now provide a self-declaration, replacing the need to upload invoices and other supporting documents.
These revised trade regulations, set to be implemented in October 2026, aim to simplify processes and improve the ease of doing business by reducing compliance burdens on authorized dealer banks, exporters, and importers.
