Rs8 Billion Underpasses to Ease Rawalpindi Traffic
6 Sep
Summary
- Two major underpasses worth Rs8 billion begin construction.
- Traffic will be diverted to service roads during construction.
- Projects aim to create a signal-free corridor on Peshawar Road.
Work on two significant underpasses, collectively costing Rs8 billion, is set to begin on Monday along Peshawar Road in Rawalpindi. These new constructions are located at Race Course Park and Charing Cross.
The Punjab Communication and Works Department has awarded the contract to the Frontier Works Organisation. To ensure traffic flow, all vehicles will be diverted to the adjacent service roads during the construction phase, a measure implemented to prevent the complete closure of the main artery.
These underpasses are a crucial part of a larger plan to develop a 25-kilometer signal-free corridor from Islamabad Expressway to Motorway Chowk. Previously completed projects include the General Post Office Chowk and Kutchery Chowk remodelling. The goal is to drastically reduce travel time, ideally to 15-20 minutes.
The construction is expected to conclude by the end of the year, with the underpasses themselves anticipated to be finished within two to three months. Shifting of essential utility services has already been completed to facilitate the commencement of civil works.
