Tyre's Hidden Hero: Steel Wire's Crucial Role

Bead wire, a critical yet often overlooked steel component within tyres, is essential for securely attaching the tyre to the rim and facilitating vehicle load transfer. Rajratan Global Wire has dedicated nearly 37 years to mastering its production, becoming a key supplier to prominent global tyre manufacturers such as Bridgestone, Michelin, and Goodyear.

The company's business model is built on an 'approval moat,' where the stringent qualification process for bead wire suppliers creates high switching costs for tyre makers. This allows Rajratan to maintain strong customer relationships due to the high cost of failure and the need for consistent quality.

Rajratan is currently focused on expanding its installed capacity across its facilities in Pithampur, Thailand, and Chennai, aiming to increase overall production. The Chennai plant is particularly strategic, situated near southern India's tyre manufacturing cluster and having recently crossed its break-even point.

In the June quarter (Q1 FY27), the company demonstrated operating leverage with a 16% rise in consolidated sales volume and a 29% increase in revenue. EBITDA grew by 35%, and the EBITDA margin improved, driven by higher capacity utilization and improved efficiencies.

Exports are a growing focus, with significant anticipated growth in North America and Europe, complemented by expansion in Southeast Asia. Rajratan leverages its manufacturing presence in both India and Thailand to serve international clients, with a weaker rupee potentially boosting export competitiveness.

Beyond its core bead wire business, Rajratan is exploring diversification into steel cord for conveyor belts. This new venture leverages existing metallurgical capabilities and aims to replicate the 'approval moat' success in an adjacent industrial market, though it is still in its early stages.
