Pune Metro Spurs New Flyover Plan on Karve Road
9 Apr
Summary
- Two new flyovers planned for Karve Statue Chowk and Ambedkar Chowk.
- New flyovers will coordinate with Pune Metro's elevated route.
- Detailed studies include traffic, environmental, and financial feasibility.

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is set to construct two new flyovers on Karve Road, at Karve Statue Chowk and Ambedkar Chowk, to alleviate traffic congestion. This initiative is crucial as the area will host a spur line of the Pune Metro from SNDT to Manikbaug via Warje. Future road infrastructure projects will be significantly constrained once the Metro line is operational.
The project involves a detailed study to design the flyovers, including a seven-day traffic survey using automatic cameras. This will be supplemented by origin-destination studies, traffic movement counts, speed delay analyses, simulation modeling, traffic impact assessments, and traffic modeling. Signal timing and waiting periods in surrounding areas will also be meticulously examined.
Further studies will cover land acquisition, accident data from the past five years, environmental impact assessments (EIA), and socio-economic benefits. The EIA will scrutinize effects on water resources, vegetation, wildlife, pollution, and resettlement needs. Financial feasibility, encompassing cost estimation, construction, and maintenance, will also be evaluated alongside projected time savings, reduced travel distances, and pollution reduction benefits.
