Pune Tunnel & River Clean-Up: ₹7000 Cr Project Unveiled
19 Apr
Summary
- A 20km twin tunnel costing ₹7,000 crore is planned for Pune.
- River rejuvenation projects for Pawana, Indrayani, and Mula-Mutha rivers are underway.
- Projects require 50% self-funding to secure central government assistance.

Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) is considering significant infrastructure projects, including a proposed ₹7,000 crore, 20-km Yerawada-Katraj underground twin tunnel. This tunnel aims to function as an internal ring road, reducing travel time and congestion within the city.
Alongside the tunnel, PMRDA is planning river rejuvenation initiatives. A ₹218.07 crore project is designated for cleaning the Pawana river by treating sewage before it enters the water. Tenders for this project are expected to be released soon.
To qualify for central government assistance for these large-scale projects, PMRDA must mobilize at least 50% of the project costs through its own financial means, such as loans, bonds, or public-private partnerships. The authority is actively exploring all funding options.
Plans also include improvements for the Indrayani and Mula-Mutha rivers, aligning with Central Pollution Control Board and National Green Tribunal guidelines. Setting up sewage treatment plants will be a key component of these environmental efforts.
