19 Jun
Summary
- Pub takings have fallen by nearly a third due to a six-month road closure.
- Landlord invested £1m to revive the derelict pub in 2024.
- The bridge repair project was hoped to start this summer.

A pub landlord in Brewood, Staffordshire, is expressing grave concern for his business's survival due to ongoing bridge repair delays. Billy Hutchinson, owner of The Lesters Arms, reports a nearly one-third decrease in takings since road closures were implemented over six months ago. These closures are a result of a sinkhole appearing on Brewood Bridge, which spans the Shropshire Union Canal.
Hutchinson, who invested £1 million in 2024 to restore the previously derelict pub, stated that the road closures are costing his establishment £5,000 weekly. He highlighted the significant negative impact on local businesses and the community, emphasizing the urgency for repairs to commence.
The Canal and River Trust, responsible for the bridge, indicated that they aim to begin repairs this summer. This timeline is contingent on the approval of a design submitted to Staffordshire County Council. The trust acknowledged the route's importance and expressed appreciation for the community's patience.
