Premier Energies Navigates Cost Surge, Maintains Margins
29 Sep
Summary
- Premier Energies expects to protect margins despite significant input cost increases.
- Smaller, non-integrated solar manufacturers will likely face greater financial pressure.
- Strong solar demand continues in India, particularly for rooftop installations.
Premier Energies anticipates maintaining its profit margins, projecting resilience despite significant increases in input costs. Chief Business Officer Vinay Rustagi noted that commodity prices for metals, polymers, and freight have risen between 10% and 50%. Integrated players like Premier Energies are better positioned to absorb these pressures and partially pass them onto consumers. The company's expanded cell business is also contributing to lower procurement costs and operating leverage, leading to broadly stable margins.
However, smaller and non-integrated solar manufacturers are expected to face more acute pain, a trend likely to become more visible in the July-September quarter. The duration of this cost pressure remains uncertain, with hopes for stabilization tied to geopolitical events in the Middle East. Despite these challenges, solar demand in India continues to be strong. While utility-scale solar has seen a decrease, rooftop solar demand has surged significantly.
Premier Energies recently inaugurated India's largest solar cell plant, tripling its cell capacity and positioning it as the country's largest cell manufacturer. This expansion is crucial as India implements policies favoring domestically produced cells, with approximately 75% of demand expected to be met by local manufacturing. The company's order book remained strong at approximately Rs 15,000 crore last quarter, with continued strong order intake this quarter. Expansion into transformers and batteries is also on track.
