Prayagraj Jewelers and Utensil Sellers Lament Diwali Woes Amid Surging Gold and Silver Prices
18 Oct
Summary
- Jewelers and utensil sellers in Prayagraj's Sangam City faced a "not-so-happy" Diwali due to skyrocketing gold and silver prices
- Decorative items, artificial flowers, and other festive goods saw brisk sales, but the utensil market was slow
- Roadside shops offering Diwali decorations and essentials did a roaring business

As of October 18, 2025, the Diwali festivities in Prayagraj's Sangam City were in full swing, with markets thronged by eager shoppers. However, the celebrations were not equally joyous for all merchants. While shops selling sweets, gifts, and decorative items witnessed heavy foot traffic, jewelers and utensil sellers faced a dampened Diwali.
One of the jewelers in Sangam City attributed the lackluster performance to the skyrocketing prices of gold and silver, which have almost doubled since last year. The high costs of precious metals have taken a toll on the jewelry business, spoiling the Diwali cheer for these merchants.
