Internship Offers Rejected: Location, Duration Cited
23 Mar
Summary
- Location, internship duration, and role interest impact offer acceptance.
- Over 1.65 lakh internship offers were made, with over 16,000 interns joining.
- Monthly stipend for interns is ₹9,000, with government funding ₹8,100.

The Prime Minister Internship Scheme (PMIS) is experiencing challenges with candidates not accepting job offers, with location, internship duration, and role interest cited as primary reasons. Government data indicates that out of over 1.65 lakh internship offers extended across the first two rounds, only approximately 16,000 interns ultimately joined.
The Corporate Affairs Ministry, responsible for implementing the scheme, has analyzed these low joining rates. Feedback surveys and stakeholder consultations revealed that candidates prefer shorter commutes, ideally 5-10 km, and find the 12-month internship period longer than typical skilling programs.
As of March 2026, the monthly financial assistance for interns under PMIS is ₹9,000. The government provides ₹8,100 of this amount, while companies contribute the remaining ₹900 from their CSR or own funds, with the option to offer more.
In Round I, over 8,700 interns joined out of more than 82,000 offers. Round II saw over 7,300 interns join from more than 83,000 offers. These figures highlight a significant gap between offers made and actual participation in the scheme.
