Summary
- Provident fund wage ceiling increased to Rs 25,000 monthly.
- Over 51 lakh new employees gain social security coverage.
- Government faces an estimated annual cost of Rs 11,339 crore.
The Union Cabinet has approved a significant increase in the provident fund wage ceiling, raising it to Rs 25,000 per month from the previous Rs 15,000. This adjustment is set to bring more than 51 lakh additional employees under the umbrella of mandatory social security. The decision, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, aims to provide greater stability to employees and aid in workforce retention by employers.
This revision, the first since September 2014, acknowledges sustained wage growth and increasing incomes. Employees earning between Rs 15,000 and Rs 25,000 will now be eligible for provident fund savings, pension benefits, and insurance protection. The government estimates an annual expenditure of Rs 11,339 crore due to this expansion, an increase from the current budgetary support.
While enhancing retirement savings and social security, the higher ceiling will also impact take-home salaries for some employees due to increased mandatory contributions. Employers may also face higher statutory costs. The precise implications are subject to the forthcoming formal notification detailing the implementation provisions.
