Petco Data Breach: SSNs and Financials Exposed

Petco has confirmed a widespread data security breach, revealing that sensitive customer information was compromised. Legal notices indicate that exposed data included customers' names, Social Security numbers, driver's license numbers, dates of birth, and financial information like account and card numbers.

The breach reportedly stemmed from a misconfigured setting within one of Petco's software applications, which inadvertently made numerous files accessible online. Petco has since corrected the setting and implemented additional security measures to prevent future occurrences.

As a result of the compromise, Petco is offering free credit and identity monitoring services to affected individuals in states where this is legally mandated. The company has declined to specify the total number of customers impacted or confirm if unauthorized parties accessed the exposed files.
