Perma-Pipe International Holdings announced a robust second quarter, with net sales increasing by 24.4% to $59.6 million. The company's backlog demonstrated substantial growth, reaching $142.3 million as of July 31, indicating a strong pipeline of future revenue. This expansion is largely attributed to Perma-Pipe's strategic pivot from solely selling pipes to developing comprehensive infrastructure platforms, particularly within the Middle East market.
New facilities are central to this expansion. An Ohio plant, targeting the data center sector, is set for full production by early 2027. Meanwhile, a Qatar plant has commenced operations, serving regional clients including QatarEnergy. The company also secured qualification for a new product line with Saudi Aramco, opening access to a significant market.
Furthermore, Perma-Pipe is entering the pipe manufacturing sector for the first time through a joint venture in Jordan, aimed at the National Water Carrier Program and reconstruction efforts in the Levant. This strategic move, supported by a new $90 million credit facility, enables the company to pursue larger-scale projects.
Despite the impressive growth, the quarter saw a slight decrease in gross margin to 29.2%, impacted by increased material and logistics expenses, startup costs in Ohio, and a $3.9 million receivable write-off linked to a customer's financial difficulties. Ongoing Middle East conflicts also contributed to higher shipping and commodity costs.
