Judge Blocks Pentagon AI Surveillance Ban

A federal judge has permanently blocked the Pentagon's designation of Anthropic as a supply-chain risk, citing illegality and baselessness. Judge Rita Lin concluded the government retaliated against Anthropic for resisting unrestricted use of its Claude AI for surveillance and autonomous weapons.

While Palantir was not directly involved, the ruling impacts its Maven Smart System. This system runs Anthropic's Claude, and the Pentagon plans to designate Maven as a program of record by the end of September. The court's decision is expected to prevent Palantir from needing to rewrite its orchestration within classified environments on a tight schedule.

The ruling shrinks the risk that Maven's model layer could be reshuffled before official funding. Maven's contract ceiling is currently $1.3 billion, with further Army agreements potentially reaching $10 billion. The FY 2027 budget requests $2.3 billion for Maven and related systems as part of a larger $58.5 billion AI investment.

Palantir's value proposition lies in its integration layer, allowing flexible model switching rather than reliance on a single AI. The company demonstrated integrating NVIDIA's Nemotron Ultra, showcasing its platform's adaptability. The court ruling reduces execution risk for Maven's path to program-of-record status, though Palantir's high forward P/E ratio near 110x and P/S ratio of 73x continue to be central valuation questions.
