Oregon Wood Industry Gets $15M Boost for Rural Jobs

The U.S. Forest Service has announced a substantial investment of over $15 million to invigorate Oregon's wood product industry. This funding is strategically allocated to bolster rural economies, promote active forest management practices, and advance wood and energy infrastructure within the state.

This initiative, championed by Senators Jeff Merkley and Ron Wyden, is presented as a dual benefit, simultaneously addressing wildfire risk reduction and strengthening Oregon's globally recognized wood products sector. The grants will support a variety of projects, from equipment upgrades to the development of renewable energy systems.

Awarded grants will facilitate the modernization and reopening of idle sawmills, enhance biomass energy systems, and promote the adoption of mass timber in construction. Companies like Neiman Enterprises, Malheur Forest Products, and the University of Oregon are set to benefit, driving innovation and job creation.

These 20 Oregon projects, funded as part of a larger $105.5 million national award in 2026, are divided across three grant categories: Wood Products Infrastructure Assistance, Wood Innovations Grants, and Wood Community Grants.
