French telecommunications giant Orange has forged a significant partnership with AST SpaceMobile and Satellite Connect Europe. This collaboration is designed to advance direct-to-cell connectivity, a crucial step in enhancing mobile network capabilities.
As part of this alliance, demonstrations are scheduled to take place in Romania by late 2026. These trials will feature voice, SMS, and data services, proving the viability of satellite-based communication directly to standard mobile phones.
Satellite Connect Europe, established recently, is developing a European satellite constellation with a German operational hub. Its objective is to provide secure satellite-to-smartphone connectivity for both commercial and governmental clients, underscoring a push for European technological independence.
Orange's CEO has actively championed European satellite sovereignty, advocating for competitive European initiatives like the planned IRIS2. This strategic move positions Europe to vie with established and emerging low Earth orbit networks from major global players.
