Delhi's government is contemplating the reintroduction of a tram system around Shahjahanabad, a move intended to enhance sustainable and heritage-sensitive urban mobility. This consideration is part of a broader comprehensive redevelopment strategy for Old Delhi.
To streamline infrastructure development and maintain uniform standards, a proposal suggests transferring the management of all roads within the Shahjahanabad Redevelopment Corporation (SRDC) area to the Public Works Department (PWD). This would enable coordinated planning and faster project execution.
Key projects under review include the improvement of SP Mukherjee Marg, redevelopment of main and inner streets, facade restoration in Chandni Chowk, and the redevelopment of the Jama Masjid precinct. PWD has been tasked with creating an integrated redevelopment strategy that consolidates all project plans.
Furthermore, SRDC is exploring the feasibility of identifying unutilised properties to develop them into outlets, eateries, cafes, and tourist-friendly infrastructure through Public-Private Partnerships. A follow-up review meeting is scheduled for the upcoming month.
